About the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) is the entity responsible for the deployment and ownership of the Barakah nuclear energy plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), established by decree in December 2009 by the late H.H. Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyen, President of the UAE. The company is driving the decarbonization of the UAE's power systems and aims to focus on realising the full value of nuclear energy for the UAE through low-carbon energy systems and strategic clean energy partnerships, reinforcing the UAE's position as a global leader in clean energy.

The combination of the predictive capability of artificial intelligence algorithms and the real-time data transmission capability of mobile computing devices provides a promising area to enhance decision making in nuclear power plants and provide continuous support for the safe operation of the overall plant. AI use and applications can help improve efficiency, safety, automation and predictive maintenance in nuclear sites. AI, together with other technologies, could boost the efficiency of nuclear power production.

Why AI Security is Critical for ENEC

The nuclear power industry is increasingly reliant on digital systems to operate efficiently and safely. As the industry continues to adopt advanced technologies, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the risk of cyber threats and attacks grows. Cybersecurity is no longer a peripheral concern but a critical component of nuclear power plant operations. For ENEC, AI security is essential to protect both operational safety and national energy security as they continue to expand the UAE's nuclear energy capabilities.

The Mileva team in partnership with the education company Decoded delivered a three-part seminar series on AI leadership for the executive team at the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC). The series covered essential AI literacy topics to ensure all attendees, regardless of their prior technical knowledge, gained a clear understanding of artificial intelligence fundamentals, terminology, and practical applications. Additionally, sessions delved deeply into the critical intersection of AI and cybersecurity, highlighting emerging security threats, data security considerations within AI-driven enterprise products, and effective strategies to mitigate these risks. The seminars also extensively addressed global governance frameworks, compliance standards, and regulatory landscapes to equip ENEC’s leadership with the knowledge to navigate international AI governance effectively. Through targeted and engaging sessions, Mileva successfully empowered ENEC’s executives to confidently integrate secure and compliant AI practices within their organisation, bolstering both operational safety and strategic objectives.
